What is Blazor? 

Blazor is an open-source web framework developed by Microsoft. It enables developers to write client-side code in C# and leverage the .NET framework, which can provide a rich experience for end users.Footnote 1

The term Blazor is a combination of a browser and Razor. Razor is used in C# web development and the Razor syntax can also support Visual Basic language to create dynamic content for websites, such as forms and interactive menus.Footnote 2

One of the things that makes Blazor effective is that it can run on the browser itself via WebAssembly rather than through a plugin. But what is Blazor WebAssembly? It is a way of creating interactive web applications using the .NET and C# programming languages. WebAssembly uses web standards to allow .NET code to run directly in the browser without needing a server. All major browsers in the market today include WebAssembly as standard, so client-side Blazor pages will work on iOS, Android, Linux, and Windows-based browsers.Footnote 3

If you’re considering whether to use Blazor or Angular, it’s worth understanding that both are web development frameworks, but that they have key differences: Angular is TypeScript-based tool that is suited for building client-rendered web applications.Footnote 4

Blazor is a framework for building Razor components into websites and web-based apps. Once you’ve created a Blazor page, it produces .NET standard DLLs, which are also open source, so you can later re-use anything in your Blazor components library. They all run inside the .NET runtime compiled into WebAssembly so that they will work on every major browser in use today, on every central computing platform. It can even interact with and incorporate JavaScript code inside your C# code.

Blazor is not a complete alternative to JavaScript. You may need to include some JavaScript code if you want to use features like geolocation on your web apps.

Blazor and React are both open-source tools for building web-based apps. Beyond that, they have very little in common. React is a JavaScript library, whereas Blazor is a UI framework. Blazor could be considered the faster of the two, but it is complex. Blazor apps often have to load the entire .NET runtime and other dependencies. However, Blazor’s server-side apps are said to run slightly faster than React apps.Footnote 6

How long it takes to learn Blazor is dependent on your learning style and prior knowledge. It can take years to learn web development. But if you are already an experienced web developer, learning Blazor can take considerably less time.

Razor is a templating engine that builds websites out of HTML and C#. Blazor is a framework for building client-and server-side web apps using the .NET framework and some JavaScript. Blazor uses Razor, but Razor can and does run independently of Blazor.
