The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) is Maryland’s graduate school of the environment, founded in 1925. UMCES is both globally eminent and locally relevant, contributing to the science behind the restoration of Chesapeake Bay. UMCES researchers tackle pressing environmental problems by producing timely and accurate information that is effectively communicated to policy makers and resource managers. UMCES researchers conduct practical, highly collaborative quality research from the mountains to the sea, using techniques spanning genes to ecosystems.

UMCES is one of twelve institutions that make up the University System of Maryland (USM). USM is the state of Maryland’s public higher education system, with a mission to improve the quality of life for the people of Maryland by providing a comprehensive range of high quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities. USM and its Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation has launched USMx to leverage the affordances of online learning, and give students the flexibility to interact with content, faculty, and learning communities in the ways that best meet their needs.
