Curriculum

The MSc People-Centred Artificial Intelligence course consists of 180 credits and is divided into 11 fully autonomous credit-bearing modules. Its cross-discipline approach builds on a strong technical foundation, placing people at the center of all innovation. You will learn fundamental AI concepts and master universal machine learning tools essential for any AI job role, as well as specific practical and research skills in key AI topics and applications. 

By the end of the course, you will have:

  • Strong technical expertise: Study subjects such as machine learning, computer vision, and pattern recognition. You will gain in-depth knowledge and experience with cutting-edge tools such as deep neural networks (DNN), transformers, diffusion models, and deep reinforcement learning (deep RL).
  • Specialized knowledge: Explore emerging AI fields such as health, sustainability, and the Metaverse. You can leverage the cross-disciplinary research to use AI to solve challenges in industries finance, healthcare, manufacturing, or entertainment.
  • A long-term vision for AI: Gain a critical understanding of the societal, ethical, and legislative aspects that will shape the future of AI. Channel your tech expertise to use policy or innovation to implement tech for the betterment of people and society.

Admissions

To meet the entry requirements for the MSc People-Centred Artificial Intelligence, applicants must have a minimum of a Lower Second Class Honors (2:2) UK undergraduate degree, or a recognized equivalent international qualification. It is strongly recommended that this qualification is in: 

  • Engineering 

  • Physical Sciences

  • Mathematical Sciences

  • Computer Science

We will also consider graduates with relevant work or programming experience. 

The following materials are required to complete the online application:

  • Transcripts 

  • Two references (professional or academic) 

  • Personal statement (500 to 1,000 words)

  • Résumé/CV (optional)

  • English proficiency scores (if English is not your first language)

This MSc is developed and delivered by leading academics and pioneers in translating computer science research into commercial application. The course lead, Professor Ying-Zhe Song founded the in-person MSc and is the co-director of the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI (PAI). He also leads the SketchX Lab within the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP), one of the UK's oldest and largest AI research centers.

Professor Josef Kittler: Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, pioneer of modern machine learning and founder of CVSSP.
