NYU Steinhardt Online Mental Health Counseling Master’s

Well-rounded curriculum — online and in person

The curriculum for the online master of arts in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness program prepares learners to become mental health counselors who can serve their diverse clients and communities with the care, respect, and dignity they deserve. The curriculum combines online courses with in-person practicums and internships, and ensures that learners gain the kind of hands-on experience they need to become successful licensed counselors. The curriculum consists of a total of 60 credit hours and can be completed in as few as 21 to 30 months. Throughout the program you will focus on developing your skills both online and in person:

  • Skill development in a secure virtual setting: Prepare for your practicum and internship while developing key mental health counseling skills and acting out client-therapist scenarios with a partner.
  • Real-world training at sites near your area: During a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship you will help real clients at NYU-approved sites near your community.

Admissions requirements

NYU Steinhardt seeks professionals who are passionate about helping others and committed to bettering the lives of families and their communities. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university and have earned an undergraduate degree with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (based on a 4.0 scale). The program accepts applications year round, and offers multiple start dates a year.

  • Statement of purpose

  • Current résumé/CV

  • Two letters of recommendation


Practicum, internship, and immersion

Gain hands-on experience with the program’s 100-hour practicum and 600-hour in-person internship component, and work alongside mental health professionals and other experts in the field. The internship — a  clinical training — is a key component to the curriculum and provides you with the opportunity to apply the theories learned in the classroom to real-world settings. 

Learners are also required to attend one in-person immersion on the NYU campus in New York City where they build connections with faculty and peers, hear from leading experts, and experience the unique energy and multicultural communities of the city itself.
