MiFi

What is MiFi?

MiFi stands for mobile Wi-Fi. A MiFi hotspot is a wireless router that lets you connect multiple devices, via a cellular network, to the internet. It uses a SIM card to connect to a cellular network and broadcasts a Wi-Fi signal that your devices can connect to.Footnote 1 MiFi is portable, and easy to use, because it doesn’t require a Wi-Fi or ethernet connection to work.

Some well-known examples of MiFi are: Netgear Nighthawk M1, Inseego 5g MiFi m2000, and Verizon Jetpack MiFi 8800L. However, there are many other MiFi devices available on the market that vary in terms of network coverage, speed, and number of devices that can connect.

MiFi course curriculum

If you are interested in how to learn MiFi, it can be helpful to have foundational knowledge about wireless communication, cellular networks, and routers. You may also want to learn about the basics of Wi-Fi technology, like frequencies and channels, and about the types of cellular networks like 3G, 4G, and 5G.

A MiFi tutorial can cover many different topics including how to:

  • Use MiFi device hardware and software.

  • Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Use security features of MiFi devices, like password protection.

  • Optimize download and upload speeds.

  • Connect to 5GHz or 2.4GHz bands at the same time to improve link speed, manage network congestion, and enhance connection quality.

  • Safeguard personal information.

  • Hide or reveal information with the help of the guest network.

  • Track malicious data.

  • Monitor data usage.

  • Use the interface of various MiFi service providers.

  • Connect to nearby devices.

edX offers online courses that allow learners to study a variety of topics including computer science, web development, and much more. ‌ Sign up for an accelerated boot camp or enroll in a full degree program and start working toward a bachelor's degree or (for more advanced learners) a master’s degree in a relevant subject. You can also explore executive education programs specifically designed for busy professionals.

Explore IT jobs

There are various jobs that use MiFi in their everyday operations, like:

  • Network engineers: These professionals may use MiFi to troubleshoot connectivity problems or network coverage issues in remote locations.Footnote 2

  • Tech support professionals: These professionals can use MiFi to remotely access customer devices or networks to diagnose and resolve issues.Footnote 3

  • Mobile app developers: These professionals can benefit from MiFi knowledge and optimize their app’s performance on different networks and devices.

  • Telecom customer service representatives: These professionals can provide better technical support and customer service with MiFi know-how.Footnote 4

  • Sales engineers and marketing specialists: These professionals can use their knowledge of MiFi to sell products and services dependent on mobile connectivity.Footnote 5

  • Cryptographers: These professionals may use MiFi security protocols to implement secure encryption algorithms as well as to develop and test communication channels that rely on mobile connections.

Each of these roles will have different education and skills requirements. For example, you may be able to build relevant skills with a coding boot camp. However, some employers may seek candidates with a degree in engineering, depending on the role. Before deciding on a specific learning path, research the positions you hope to pursue and align your coursework with your career goals.

How to use MiFi in your career

MiFi-based careers leverage familiarity with network protocols like TCP/IP. Having a certain comfort level working with computer networking and wireless technology, as well as experience or interest in troubleshooting network-related hiccups, may also be helpful. Some basic information about how SIM cards and cellular networks work may add further value.

You can use MiFi in a career as a field technician, who works in remote locations, to access manuals or technical information while in the field. Network technicians or customer support representatives can help customers overcome their connectivity issues. Software developers and programmers can develop secure and efficient apps based on mobile connectivity. Encryption specialists, who use WPA (Wi-Fi-Protected Access) and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) to secure data transmissions, also work with MiFi.
