What is project-based learning?

Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered learning practice designed to teach concepts using real-world problems and challenges. PBL is commonly used to develop critical thinking skills and produce high-quality, deeply engaging classroom models and lesson plans.

Teachers often use project-based learning to provide in-depth learning experiences for students to help them make strides in their education. Students are typically given a real-world problem or challenge to solve and are asked to apply what they learn to create a solution. This approach to learning is student-centered, with the teacher acting as a guide and facilitator rather than a traditional lecturer. Projects can be individual or group-based and often involve interdisciplinary approaches, bringing together concepts from different subject areas.

PBL can be highly motivating for students, as they can take ownership of their learning, explore topics of interest, and see the practical application of what they are studying. It fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills, which are essential for success today.Footnote 1

Project-based learning course curriculum

Mastering project-based learning can supplement your knowledge of students’ educational needs and help you build engaging lesson plans. Project-based learning topics may include the basics of the teaching method and how to apply it to your specific classroom, as well as information on how to kickstart a project for your students. Courses may cover the theories and concepts that underpin project-based learning in a computer science classroom, and teach you how to assess project-based learning. Other courses might put your practical skills to the test with the completion of your own project.

edX offers a variety of educational opportunities for learners interested in studying these topics, as well as a host of other disciplines. A boot camp can provide flexible, hands-on learning for those who want to upskill quickly, while executive education courses are designed for busy professionals. You can also pursue a more comprehensive curriculum in a bachelor’s degree program or, for more advanced learners, a master’s degree program. Find the right learning path for you.
