Learn Jetty server with online courses and programs

Jetty is a web application server that provides a platform for developing, testing, and deploying Java web applications. Develop Jetty and Java skills with online courses delivered through edX.

What is a Jetty web server?

To define what a jetty web server is, it’s helpful to understand how a web server works. Whenever you access a page on the internet, a web server does the work of sending you the right text files, images, hyperlinks, and other data. To serve content on the web, the server uses a scripting language, such as Python or Ruby. Jetty is an open-source web server that uses Java scripting language, which makes it easy to embed into Java applications.

Jetty also functions as a servlet container. A servlet is a type of Java class that handles specific requests and implements web applications. The servlet container transfers the request to the target servlet to execute, whether it’s to create a web page, access a database record, collect input through an HTML form, or carry out another type of online action. The servlet container also restricts access to system resources in the form of a sandbox.

The Eclipse Foundation sponsors the Eclipse Jetty Project.Footnote 1 As an open-source project, anyone can contribute ideas, modifications, and suggestions to improve Jetty. Users can also access and implement Jetty for free, including for commercial software development through the Eclipse or Apache license.

Jetty web server course curriculum

Tutorials on how to use Jetty as a web server and embed a Jetty web server into a web application may look different, but some of the topics you might learn during a course include:

  • How to deploy Jetty in an application and embed Jetty into various devices, tools, frameworks, and modern cloud services.

  • How to set up and maintain a standalone web Jetty servlet container.

  • How to replace another web server with Jetty.

  • How to support HTTP/2, WebSocket, OSGi, JMX, JNDI, JAAS, and other integrations.

A basic understanding of computers, Java, and servlet development can help you succeed in a Jetty course. Courses in computer science can also help you build the right skills to work in this field. edX offers a wide variety of educational opportunities including full bachelor’s degree and even master’s degree programs. Learners can also pursue more specialized learning pathways with individual courses and boot camps.

Explore jobs that use Jetty web server

Jetty knowledge can benefit people in a wide variety of information technology- and computer science-related roles. With Jetty web server and computer science skills, you may qualify for jobs, such as:

  • Software developer: researches, designs, and creates computer and network software.Footnote 2 They analyze user needs and develop software solutions. A software developer who specializes as a Java web developer will develop systems and applications using Java.

  • Software quality assurance analyst: tests software to identify defects, reports issues, and ensures software quality.Footnote 3

  • Computer programmer: writes, tests, and modifies computer programs in languages like Java.Footnote 4

  • Front-end web developer: writes web design programs using computer languages like Java. They create a website’s technical features, design website layouts, and integrate applications.Footnote 5

  • Back-end web developer: manages the technical construction of a website and handles database interactions, user authentication, and other functions.Footnote 6

Growing your Java programming and Jetty knowledge, like knowing how to configure Jetty servers in Eclipse, can help you in the roles listed above and set you up to follow a path in Java programming careers.

For computer programming roles, professionals typically specialize in several programming languages and may have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related subject.Footnote 7 Jetty knowledge can complement web development skills you learn in a coding boot camp. Before deciding on the right educational pathway for you, it's important to research potential careers and the educational and skill requirements for each, as they can vary depending on the employer.

How to use Jetty as a Java developer

Before understanding how to use Jetty, it’s important to review what a Java developer is. Java developers use the Java programming language to create software and applications.

Those in Java developer jobs and professionals on development teams may prefer to use Jetty for a variety of reasons. It can be deployed both as a standalone server, as well as be embedded into an existing application. Java developers can embed Jetty in various clusters, devices, tools, and frameworks. You can embed the Jetty web server in your application by creating a server instance and then creating the connector or connectors that handle the network Jetty HTTP server connections.Footnote 8

When you run Jetty as an embedded system in an application, you’ll be able to test against server-like application dependencies. Other potential advantages of using Jetty include control of custom filters, caching, and headers, as well as single-object deployment. This can simplify manual testing and improve application development time. You can also use various third-party products with Jetty as plug-ins to help build production and development environments.
