Learn about ecosystems

Climate change and urban sprawl are threats to coral reefs, forests, prairies, and other ecosystems. Protecting these habitats are a priority for conservationists. Learn about ecosystems with online courses delivered through edX.

What is an ecosystem?

An ecosystem is an environment of interconnected organisms and physical elements. A coral reef’s ecosystem, for example, consists of coral, sand, microorganisms, sea anemones, seaweed, shellfish and fish of all sizes. Ecosystems can be large, like Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, or small, like a terrarium. Ecosystems of all sizes are maintained by the interaction of all organic and inorganic components in a constant cycle of energy and nutrients, driven mainly through photosynthesis.
