What are coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause illness in animals and humans.Footnote 1 The term "corona" refers to the characteristic appearance of these viruses, which have a fringe of large, bulbous surface projections, creating an image reminiscent of a royal crown or solar corona. In humans, several coronaviruses can cause respiratory infections, ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

In late 2019, a new coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2, emerged in Wuhan, China, leading to the COVID-19 pandemic. The highly contagious respiratory illness spread globally, causing widespread illness and lockdowns across the world.
