What is Aerospike?

Aerospike, a cloud-based NoSQL (non-relational) data platform, is used to streamline network traffic management, data replication, and multi-site synchronization.Footnote 1 It does not require a set schema. Instead, the data model is determined through use. For example, it can support non-relational database models, such as:

  • Key-value store: This database involves a unique identifier “key”, as well as an associated value. It’s easily partitionable, allowing data distribution and separation, and enables more horizontal scalability than any other database models.Footnote 2

  • Document store: This database stores data in documents. The most common alternative to tabular database models, document databases offer a number of advantages, such as flexibility and horizontal scalability.Footnote 3

Why learn about Aerospike?

Aerospike has many different use cases, such as cache replacements. Caches, which temporarily store data to expedite website and application load times, must be replaced to ensure ongoing system efficiency.Footnote 4 Other ways to use Aerospike include:Footnote 5

  • User profile storage: Building and storing user profiles involves a number of moving parts, such as segments and cookies. With Aerospike, developers can manage these components efficiently and intuitively, all while minimizing downtime.

  • Recommendation engines: These tools harness machine learning and predictive analytics to make customer recommendations. Aerospike streamlines the design, implementation, and maintenance processes by providing an efficient data layer that can support multiple requests at once, as well as a flexible system that can adapt to support more data over time.

  • Fraud prevention: The most advanced fraud detection algorithms, many of which rely on machine learning, require a non-relational database system like Aerospike.

Aerospike tutorial course curriculum

Data professionals of all backgrounds can benefit from in-depth knowledge of Aerospike. An Aerospike tutorial might cover the following topics:

  • Basic operations: To fully understand Aerospike, you must first master the fundamentals. These operations are known as: create, read, update, and delete (CRUD).Footnote 6

  • Layers: You may explore the basic architecture of the Aerospike platform. Its primary components include: a client layer, which contains client libraries; a clustering and data distribution layer, which enables data replication, migration, and more; and a data storage layer, which stores data in dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and flash.Footnote 7

  • Cache management: Aerospike caching can be a valuable skill, especially for cache replacements. Here, you might learn how to execute code, harness specific objects, and run tests, all within the cache layer.Footnote 8

  • Application development: Learners with more advanced knowledge may explore big data application development. You may learn how to integrate Aerospike into the development process.

Explore jobs that use Aerospike documentation

Aerospike expertise can be helpful in different roles, including:

  • Data scientist: can use Aerospike to collect and analyze large amounts of non-tabular data.

  • Developer: can use Aerospike for cache replacement, key-value-based application development, user profile management, and more.

  • Machine learning engineer: can use Aerospike to process large amounts of non-tabular data in real time, all with compute platforms and machine learning packages.Footnote 9

While it can be helpful, an understanding of how to use Aerospike isn’t the only skill requirement for these roles. Some employers may require skills and knowledge that can be acquired through specialized learning from individual courses or boot camps; others may seek out candidates with a bachelor’s degree or even a master’s degree

Aerospike use cases as a data scientist

To make the most out of Aerospike, you may need to master the following complementary or foundational subjects:

  • Data analytics: By learning the ins and outs of data analytics, you can interpret data with confidence. You’ll also be able to work skillfully with NoSQL database systems, such as Aerospike.

  • Programming: To successfully use Aerospike, you’ll need to know how to code. The platform supports a number of languages, including Java, Python, and Spark.Footnote 10

  • Data structures: By gaining a thorough understanding of data structures, along with other computer science fundamentals, you can better navigate Aerospike’s jargon and development processes.

If you are interested in learning more about these subjects, consider how online courses can help you achieve your goals. edX offers a variety of learning pathways, from a bachelor’s degree program in data science to a more specialized coding boot camp.
