UX vs. UI

What is UX/UI?

Great design goes beyond stunning aesthetics. Learn to harness cutting-edge tools to create effective user-centric experiences. While UX and UI go hand in hand, they are two distinct, related disciplines. With the Columbia Engineering UX/UI Boot Camp, you’ll learn both in addition to web prototyping. Your learning will culminate in a portfolio that showcases in-demand skills — from storyboards and prototypes to interactive apps and responsive websites.

UX: The functionality.

User experience (UX) design is focused on eliminating friction for the user of a product or service. UX includes: interaction design; information architecture; wireframing; product design; plus user research, testing, and data.

UI: The look.

User interface (UI) represents how users interact with and experience digital products and services. UI includes brand expression, visual communication, accessibility, graphic design, color, layout, and typography.

Frequently asked questions

In an edX UX/UI boot camp you will gain experience in a wide range of popular design tools and methods such as Adobe XD, Figma, InVision, agile methodology, user centered design research, and rapid prototyping. In addition, you will further add to your resume by learning how these concepts are leveraged within design fields — from UX research to UI development.

UX and UI design can often differ based on the development stage that a particular product or service is in. For example, UX design typically focuses on research and solving user problems during the product development phase, while UI design focuses on creating intuitive and visually pleasing interfaces for users when they interact with the product.

Our UX/UI boot camp will not only help you build a strong foundation in user interface research and design, but it will also offer you the opportunity to further your education on your own schedule. The flexibility of a boot camp compared to a traditional degree program allows learners to directly apply new skills gained in class to their roles in real time, as well as prepare for their next career move.

Much like any other industry, job opportunities for UX/UI designers can vary depending on prior experience, educational background, and location. Our UX/UI boot camp features career resources and support through offerings such as resume, portfolio and LinkedIn reviews, interview coaching, and access to a network of 250+ employers who are looking to hire.

UX/UI designers do not need to learn coding languages but they do need to understand a given medium to be able to work alongside web developers and other team members who code. Please note that no coding experience is required for some UX/UI camps.
